Gum disease: causes and stages
Causes of gum disease
The main cause is the buildup of plaque and tartar along the gum line. Other factors can speed up the disease: poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, genetic predisposition, stress and certain hormonal imbalances.
Gingivitis
This is the early, reversible stage. The gums become inflamed and bleed, but the bone is not yet affected. When treated in time with a professional cleaning, gingivitis heals completely.
Periodontitis
If gingivitis is not treated, the inflammation spreads to the bone. Periodontal pockets form, the bone is gradually lost, and the teeth start to become loose. At this stage, treatment stops the disease from progressing and stabilizes the teeth, but bone that has already been lost does not grow back on its own.
Diagnosis and monitoring
A complete assessment of your gum health and measurement of the periodontal pockets (periodontal charting) allow us to create a personalized treatment plan and track your progress over time.
Professional cleaning and deep cleaning (SRP)
Scaling above and below the gum line, professional brushing, Air-Flow and antiseptic rinses: the foundation of gum disease control. We remove plaque and tartar from areas your brushing at home can't reach.
Periodontal curettage
Cleaning the inflamed tissue inside the periodontal pockets, using a closed or open (flap) technique, depending on how deep the pockets are.
Laser procedures
Laser sterilization of periodontal pockets, operculectomy and the treatment of gum lesions offer faster healing and less discomfort.
Regeneration and gum surgery
Gum grafting, the tunnel technique, bone regeneration techniques and splinting of loose teeth: solutions for advanced cases that restore the look and stability of the gums.

ABOUT THE TREATMENT
What is periodontics?
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the health of the tissues that support the teeth: the gums, ligaments and the jawbone around the teeth. When these structures become inflamed or recede, the teeth lose their support and, if left untreated, can become loose or even fall out.
Gum disease often develops without pain, which is why many patients see a dentist late. A timely periodontal consultation identifies the problem in its early stage, when treatment is simple and effective.
